The Self Discovery of Atoms is a musical depiction of the moments around the big bang. The piece begins with 5 seconds of silence, which represents the eons before the know universe. The vibraphones then enter slowly, bowing the instruments. This, along with other interjections form the ensemble, depict the build up of energy to produce the explosion. Shortly after the explosion chaos ensues. Toward the end of the piece a melody emerges which represents the beginnings of organized matter. The piece ends with another 5 seconds of silence, reflecting a circular depiction of time. Instruments required: Bass Drum, Chimes, Conga, Glockenspiel, Maracas, Marimba, Snare Drum, Suspended Cymbal, Temple Blocks, Thai Gong, Thunder Sheet, 32" and 26" Timpani, Vibraphone, Whip.
